The Swedish Museum of Natural History is a government agency with a mission from the government to promote knowledge, research, and interest in our world. The agency is a prominent research institution and Sweden's largest museum. For over 200 years, the museum has collected objects and data and conducted research on life on Earth. The collections contain more than 11 million plants, animals, fungi, environmental samples, minerals, and fossils. All research and knowledge are shared in exhibitions, Cosmonova, and activities at the museum and digitally.
Do you want to help lead the development of nature and environmental monitoring? We are looking for an engaged unit manager who wants to lead our exciting operations within the Ringing and Palynology unit – where science meets societal benefit. The unit is responsible for Swedish bird ringing and is tasked with measuring pollen, conducting pollen analyses, and publishing pollen forecasts for Sweden's allergy sufferers. The unit also conducts research on bird migration patterns, and data from both ringing and pollen work is made available for other research.
RESPONSIBILITIES
As unit manager, you have overall responsibility for the unit, including personnel, work environment, budget, and operations. The unit consists of the ringing center and the palynological laboratory. You lead the work at the palynological laboratory and have support from a colleague who is responsible for the daily operations at the ringing center. Your role includes planning, leading, and following up on the unit's work in line with the agency's mission and strategic goals, as well as representing the employer and implementing the agency's priorities within the operational area. Additionally, you are responsible for ensuring that the data generated within the unit is made available for research purposes.
You will particularly be responsible for the strategic work of the palynological laboratory and the long-term development of the national pollen network and collaboration with its partners. If necessary, you will also participate in the operational work of the pollen activities.
You will be part of the management team for the Department of Nature and Environmental Monitoring and actively participate in the governance and development of the operations, while also contributing to the museum's public offerings and collaborating with other departments within the museum. Work outside of core responsibilities may occur.
QUALIFICATIONS
We are looking for someone with a university degree in biology or a related field relevant to the position. You have leadership experience and can communicate in both Swedish (or another Scandinavian language) and English, both orally and in writing. Experience as a manager is advantageous, along with experience in operational management (governance, follow-up, planning) and financial planning and follow-up. Experience within public service or government agency is also advantageous.
Other advantageous qualifications include a PhD in biology, knowledge of the Swedish avifauna, and expertise in aerobiology, phenology, botany, and palynology. We value experience in working with pollen analyses and pollen forecasts for allergy sufferers, as well as processing large datasets.
We are looking for someone with a structured working method and the ability to plan, organize, and prioritize effectively. You are skilled at building sustainable structures that facilitate collaboration for both yourself and your colleagues, and you meet deadlines. You have a genuine interest in creating and developing strong relationships. By acknowledging and highlighting others' perspectives and competencies, you contribute to an inclusive work environment where the group's goals and tasks become clear. Your ability to share your knowledge and listen to others strengthens collaboration within the team. Courage and determination characterize your leadership. You have the ability to delegate tasks and clarify roles, while acting quickly and respectfully in conflict resolution. Making decisions, even uncomfortable ones, is a natural part of your working method, and you provide both positive and constructive feedback when needed.
OTHER
Our goal is to show the way to increased knowledge and action through research and public activities, so that together we can contribute to a sustainable and bright future. Our long-term ambition is for the employees of the Swedish Museum of Natural History to reflect the diversity present in Sweden.
